Applying to a Master's program at the Faculty of Physics

Application MSc Physics

Application Deadlines:
Application for the winter semester: 15 July
Application for the summer semester: 15 January

The application for the MSc Physics requires a first professional university degree or an equivalent degree from Germany or abroad in physics, astrophysics or in another mathematical-scientific subject area.
Please consider:
- A successful application requires that you finish your Bachelor till September 30 (for the application for winter term) and March 31 (for summer term).
- You can only apply twice.

The application for the MSc Physics includes the following steps:

1 Step: Participation in the aptitude procedure for the MSc Physics (see below).

2. Step: Depending on whether you belong to the group
Germans and Bildungsinländer (students of foreign nationality who obtained a German higher education entrance qualification)
or
EU/EEA citizens
or
Non-EU citizens
,
further requirements for the application have to be considered. Please read the information on the LMU's website carefully.

Applicants must register for the MSc Physics via the online application portal and upload the following application documents and answer the questionnaire provided there. The portal usually opens approx. 2-3 months before the application deadline:

1. a tabular curriculum vitae.

2. a copy of the degree certificate from the first degree (first professional university degree); if not yet available, a current trancscript of records.

3. an essay of no more than 1,000 words in German or English explaining the interest and skills for studying the MSc Physics programme with a detailed description of the previous achievements in the first degree programme (useful: information on special lectures attended in the first degree programme, information on the topic and content of the Bachelor's thesis, special lectures attended during your first degree studies, and information on the areas you intend to focus on during the planned Master’s degree course).

4. a proof of subject knowledge in the form of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores in physics or mathematics (only for applicants whose first degree was not completed at a university in a country of the European Union).

5. a questionnaire (provided in the online application portal).

The applicants will be notified about the results of the aptitude assessment approx. 2-3 weeks after the application deadline. In this letter you will receive information for the further steps towards enrolment.

Application MSc Astrophysics

The application for the MSc Astrophysics at LMU consists of two elements:

1. Application to the MSc Astrophysics Selection Committee of the Faculty of Physics (see further instructions below).

2. If you are neither a German citizen nor a "Bildungsinländer" (see this link for a definition of Bildungsinländer), then also submit an application to the LMU International Office. This should be done in parallel to the selection process, i.e. before the deadlines mentioned below, in order to avoid delays. Please follow the steps outlined by the International Office.

Note that to be accepted into the MSc Astrophysics program you need to be accepted by i) the MSc Astrophysics Selection Committee of the Faculty of Physics and – if you are a student who does not qualify as "Bildungsinländer" – by ii) the LMU International Office.

Enrolling in the MSc Astrophysics program requires a Bachelor's degree in physics, astrophysics or another similar science subject.

Previous training in theoretical physics (mechanics, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics and statistics), a solid education in mathematics, and some research experience (demonstrated with, e.g., a Bachelor thesis project) are prerequisites for a successful application. In general, students with a Bachelor degree in Engineering do not meet the requirements of our program.

You may only apply twice.

Application Deadlines:
15 January and 15 July annually

Applications to our program can be made during your last two semesters of Bachelor studies or after completion of your Bachelor studies. Enrollment in our program requires that you complete your Bachelor studies by October 1 for the winter term or by April 1 for the summer term.
The decisions by the MSc Astrophysics Selection Committee will be emailed and posted no later than one month after the application deadline.

Immediate and deferred start of MSc studies
Accepted applicants can commence their studies in either of the two semesters following their admission. This corresponds to starting 2.5 months after each application deadline or deferring to the following semester, corresponding to 8.5 months after each application deadline. Applying early and deferring the starting date can be useful, allowing for more time for visa applications and moving to Munich.
In the case you are planning to defer a semester, there is no need to apply to the LMU International Office until you have been accepted by the Faculty of Physics. For an immediate start, both applications must be submitted at the same time and before the deadline.

Semesters periods:
October 1st — March 31st (winter semester; lectures start mid October)
April 1st — September 30th (summer semester; lectures start mid April)

Applications to the MSc Astrophysics Selection Committee of the Faculty of Physcis are to be submitted via the EFV application portal. We accept applications from March 1st until July 15th, and from September 1st until January 15th.

Application portal: https://www.efv.verwaltung.uni-muenchen.de/masters_astrophysics

To access the application portal you will have to create an account. Once you have access, the application form will ask you to provide the following documents and information.

1. A tabular curriculum vitae.

2. An essay of no more than 1,000 words in English explaining the motivation and the skills that will enable you to succeed in the MSc Astrophysics programme, with a detailed description of achievements in your previous degree programme(s).

3. A current transcript of records and, if already available, a copy of your Bachelor's degree certificate (or a certificate of an equivalent university degree).

4. If available, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores in physics if your previous degree was not completed at a university in the European Union. This may help us gauge your previous experience, but we will review your application also without GRE scores.

5. If available and if you are a non-native English speaker, please provide proof of English language proficiency through the TOEFL, IELTS or a comparable standardized exam. Please note that if you are from a non-English speaking country and your Bachelor degree instruction was nevertheless carried out in English, no exam results are necessary. Please just provide a letter from your University confirming that the instruction was in English. Also, do not provide any language certification, if you have a German Abitur.

For the application to the LMU International Office, please refer to the information in the "Application steps" above.

Before submitting your application, please carefully consider all the information provided above. For further questions, you can contact:
