Dr. Florian Schüder receives the award for his outstanding dissertation entitled "Advancing and applying Next-Generation DNA-based super-resolution microscopy".
The Theodor Hänsch PhD Award is donated by the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation for the Faculty of Physics and is endowed with 4,000 euros. It is named after Professor Theodor W. Hänsch (Nobel Prize winner in 2005) and is intended to honor particularly outstanding dissertations in the field of physics.
The award ceremony took place online on February 7, 2022, as part of the Munich Physics Colloquium. Vice-Dean Professor Jan Lipfert led through the evening award ceremony, which was very well attended with almost 90 interested participants.
Vice-Dean Lipfert's introductory words on the doctoral award and the choice of the award winner were followed by the managing director of the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation, Dr. Stefan Jorda, who introduced the foundation.
Professor Dr. Ralf Jungmann, Professor of Experimental Physics at LMU Munich and head of the research group "Molecular Imaging and Bionanotechnology" at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and LMU Munich (Martinsried), with whom Mr. Schüder received his doctorate, emphasized in his subsequent laudation Florian Schüder's outstanding and exceptional achievements during his studies and doctoral period. He said he was one of the most talented students he had met so far and emphasized the enthusiasm and ambition with which Schüder researches and works.
In his subsequent talk, "Development and application of smart DNA probes for super-resolution microscopy," Florian Schüder very clearly summarized the main results of his dissertation with numerous images and animations. His work combines advanced high-resolution microscopy with novel approaches from the field of DNA nanotechnology. He concluded by thanking Professor Jungmann, among others, for the very good collaboration.
Since 2021, Dr. Schüder is a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Joerg Bewersdorf at the Department of Cell Biology at Yale University. The Faculty of Physics wishes Dr. Florian Schüder all the best for his future research and working life!
