LMU Physics Team Achieves Historic 5th Place at the IPT

The ITP was held at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, USA, at the end of May. By advancing to the semifinals - reserved for only the top nine teams - the LMU students Marianna Ruggeri, Felix Barth, Jonas Köllermeyer, Joachim Miesner, Benjamin Thiel, and Rushana Yakupova, with support from Constantin Albers, also secured an important advantage for Germany. As a result, a German team will once again be able to compete directly at next year's IPT without first having to qualify through an additional international preliminary round.

The team‘s exceptional achievement was warmly congratulated by both the Dean of the Department of Physics, Prof. Ulrich Schollwöck, and the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Prof. Jochen Weller. „The LMU team's fifth-place finish is an outstanding achievement and a powerful demonstration of what our students can accomplish when they are introduced to research-oriented work early in their studies and receive the right support“, said Weller. „The tournament combines experimental skills, theoretical modeling, and scientific debate at the highest international level - precisely the combination that lies at the heart of modern physics education at LMU. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire team and its supervisors on this remarkable accomplishment.“

Scientific Competition at the Highest Level

The International Physicists‘ Tournament is a global team competition that differs significantly from traditional physics olympiads. Over the course of several months, participating teams work on challenging experimental research problems and develop theoretical models to explain their findings. During the tournament, teams present and defend their work in so-called Physics Fights. In each round, three teams take on the roles of Reporter, Opponent, and Reviewer (Moderator), engaging in rigorous scientific discussion and critical evaluation of one another‘s work.

For team leader Dr. Jürgen Durst, it was particularly rewarding to witness the LMU delegation‘s development - from the start of the experimental work in October, through their victory in the German qualifying competition, to competing on equal footing with the world‘s best teams - together with Viktor Sundström and, later, Denise Sacramento Christovam. „It is remarkable that such a level of performance is possible so early in the students‘ academic careers, especially considering that five of the six team members are still undergraduate students“, Durst said in praise of the team‘s achievement.

Successful Preparation in Germany

The LMU physicists earned their place at the IPT by winning the German qualifying competition. This year‘s selection tournament was organized and funded by the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart together with its International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS).
