Jochen Kuhn's research focuses on learning and problem-solving with multiple representations as well as teaching and learning with and about artificial intelligence in various STEM subjects, especially in physics.
This research uses established digital media (e.g. smartphones and tablets) as well as future technologies (e.g. AR-Smartglasses). To analyze the effect of using such media, inferential statistical methods are employed, utilizing product-based (subject-specific and interdisciplinary questionnaires) and process-based (physiological methods, such as eye tracking) instruments to assess cognitive and affective variables.
Jochen Kuhn completed a teaching degree in physics and mathematics at the University of Koblenz-Landau (1995-1998; now: RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau) and subsequently completed his teaching training at the Teacher Training College in Trier (1998-2000). He then worked as a teacher until 2008 and, from 2005, was also seconded to the University of Koblenz-Landau, Department of Physics Education (now: RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau). From 2008, he worked there full-time as an academic (senior) advisor and in 2011 received calls from several universities in Germany and Switzerland. In 2012, he took over as university professor (W3) and head of the Physics Education working group at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (now RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau) and moved to Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich in 2022. Since then, he has headed the Chair of Physics Education (W3) in the Faculty of Physics.
He received his doctorate in physics in 2002 and his habilitation in physics education in 2009, both from the University of Koblenz-Landau (now RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau).
Since October 1, 2025, Jochen Kuhn has also been Vice President for Innovation in Education and Teacher Training at LMU Munich. (Vice President for Innovation in Education and Teacher Training - LMU München)
